Wirebutter: connecting power, devices and software

Our Wirebutter work brought IoT hardware concepts, energy monitoring, connected communication and web/mobile control into one automation platform.

An IoT product connecting hardware and software

Wirebutter was an IoT hardware project built around a programmable power board. Our work connected the physical product with the software needed to control it, communicate with other equipment and present useful information to people using the system.

Power control and energy information

We shaped the platform around remote switching, scheduled control, energy monitoring and activity history. The product direction brought appliance control and usage information into the same experience, with application designs spanning phones, tablets and desktop interfaces.

Embedded programming and device communication

Our design work included Microsoft Micro Framework programming and communication interfaces spanning Wi-Fi, Bluetooth/BLE, Zigbee and power-line communication using HomePlug. We considered how these interfaces could connect the power board with applications, sensors and other equipment.

Designing for extensibility

We considered how the platform could be reprogrammed for different applications and connected to additional sensors. That meant working across embedded behaviour, device interfaces and application controls, rather than treating the firmware and user experience as separate projects. Household and business automation were among the intended uses.

Experience that informs our connected-device work

Wirebutter brought hardware concepts, embedded software, communication protocols and application design together. It is a historical project, rather than a current product offer. Any new connected-power solution requires its own component selection, operating requirements and safety assessment.

The challenge

Wirebutter set out to connect everyday appliances with programmable power control, energy information and communication between devices.

The approach

Our team worked across the IoT hardware concept, Microsoft Micro Framework programming, communication interfaces and web/mobile presentation, treating the device and its applications as one system.

The contribution

We developed the connected-power product concept and application presentations, combining embedded programming, control interfaces and an extensible automation design.

A few useful answers

Frequently asked questions.

Was Wirebutter a hardware or software project?

It combined both: an IoT power-board concept and embedded programming, together with communication interfaces and application design for control and energy information.

Which technologies formed part of the design?

Microsoft Micro Framework, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth/BLE, Zigbee and HomePlug power-line communication formed part of the project design, alongside programmable automation and sensor integration.

Is Wirebutter currently available to buy?

This case study describes a historical project. Contact us to discuss current connected-device requirements rather than treating it as a current product catalogue.
